Eco at Green End
Intent
From Nursery to Year 6, our Eco intent is for all children to have an understanding of the impact we have on the environment. We want children to learn about the environmental problems facing the earth and how we all have the ability to make changes to reverse some of the problems created in the past. We strive to instil passion in the children, which will encourage them to look after the planet and protect it for their future.
Eco Curriculum
Our Eco intent is threaded through daily school life and through our broad curriculum. Through our geography and English curriculum children are taught about environmental problems, locally, nationally and internationally. From litter in the community in Reception to saving The Amazon Rainforest in Year 6, we teach children how they can help to make a difference within their own communities and beyond.
Our philosohy for reduce, reuse and recycle is threaded through the Kingsway curriculum.
In design and technology, the resources we use are sustainable, reused and recycled to avoid unnecessary waste.
In textiles children have made bags and bookmarks using old clothes and materials.
When we carry out construction projects we use sustainable products that can be reused.
Green End is an Eco school
We have energy saving devices built into our environmentally friendly building, such as a sensor-controlled lights and automatic taps.
The children at Green End are taught about the importance of being more environmentally aware in day to day activities. Through our daily recycling schemes- old pens, paper and plastic waste are collected to be recycled.
Every child in the school has access to their own reusable water bottle.
Even our house points are made from potato starch!
All food waste is collected from lunch and is then used by Manchester Council to create compost. To stop food waste children choose their school lunch the day before so kitchen staff cook the correct amount of lunches each day. Any surplus lunches are plated up and given out at the end of the day.
Uniform is also reused, parents have access to a uniform sale once a term where they can exchange surplus and out grown uniform with other parents from school.

We hold pre-loved toy sales in order to reduce our carbon footprint.
We aim to reduce the use of paper as much as possible, therefore parent information is sent on line wherever possible.
We encourage all children to walk, cycle or scoot to school. We have ample bike and scooter storage. We also have several 'walk to school' weeks throughout the school year.

In Nursery we learn about..
English
We learn the story of the The Little Red Hen. We learn how food is grown and harvested and why reducing food waste is important.
Geography
We learn about our school and how we can help to care for it. We explore our natural environment and discover how things grow and change over time
Science
We investigate plants and do some Planting. We use recycled materials in our construction to build houses for the three little pigs. We also try our hand at transient art which means we can reuse materials many times.
In Reception we learn about..
English
We learn about pollution in the ocean. We write a persuasive text to tell others about the importance of following the three R’s and putting litter in the bin to save the oceans.
Geography
We explore the natural environment in and around our school. We also find out the importance of caring for our environment.
We reuse recycled materials with a purpose, building bridges and boats for The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
We plant beans and sunflowers. We find out why trees are important and how they help to keep us healthy.
In Year 1 we learn about..
English
We learn 'How to be an Eco Warrior’. We explore a non-fiction text about recycling and create a poster as a guide to being an eco warrior.
Geography
We find out how pollution is affecting Manchester and also the effect it has on rivers.
In Year 2 we learn about..
English
We write a non-fiction newspaper report on Polar Regions, using some of our learning from our geography unit to inform our writing.
We also write a non-fiction text about Litter in our local area.
Geography
We learn about the polar regions and the impact global warming is having on these areas. We look at arctic animals and we discuss if it would matter if the poles melted completely.
We also find out what some of the environmental threats are to our coastal habitats.
In Year 3 we learn about..
English
We complete a non-fiction writing unit about a young environmentalist from India called Abhir Bhalla, who has already fought for change in the fight against air pollution.
Geography
We learn about Castelton. We go on a school trip to the area and find out about the key issues and environmental threats facing the countryside.
Investigating a little further from home, we look at India and some of the key environmental issues affecting Indian cities.
In Year 4 we learn about..
English
We write a newspaper article about litter in our community.
We also write a balanced argument for electric cars vs walking to school.
Geography
We look at The Orkney Islands and how they use renewable energy.
We learn about the great barrier reef and the environmental pressures it faces. We talk about what can and is being done to protect the area.
Science
In science we explore the changes in within our environment. We find out how these occur, both naturally and through human impact.
We explore the impact we have on our local environments and combat this through planting and litter picking.
In Year 5 we learn about..
English
We write a balanced argument for and against tourism in the Lake District. We explore factors including, footpath erosion, littering, traffic congestion and pollution.
Geography
We look at the human affect on national parks with a focus on the Lake district.
We also explore the impact volcanic eruptions have on local residents and the environment.
In Year 6 we learn about..
English
We write about the David Attenborough documentary ‘Watch This If You Want To Save The Planet’ We also write a non fiction unit linked to the Amazon Rainforest geography unit.
Geography
We look at Urban areas in the UK Including Manchester. We talk about How we can make urban areas sustainable for the future and how urban areas impact the environment.
Why learn about the Amazon River and why the forest is so important? Why and how is it under threat? What can be done to prevent this?
